PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - Two of the top women's soccer teams in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and East Region faced off on Tuesday afternoon, as Wilmington University and Jefferson played to a scoreless draw, 0-0, at Ravenhill Field.
The draw is the third of the season for the Wildcats, moving to 5-1-3 overall and 2-0-2 in CACC play. The tie is the first for the season for Jefferson, moving to 7-1-1 overall and 3-0-1 in CACC play.
The Wildcats had the first shot of the game, as Claudia Gillum's chance was saved just 2:16 into the contest. Despite chances, that would be the only shot on frame for the Wildcats in the first half. The Wildcats had back-to-back shots in the 33rd minute, first from Eboni Bradshaw and then from Evelyn Payne seconds later. Arianna Myers made five saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
The teams traded the opening seven shots to start the second half, with Myers and Rams' goalkeeper Carly Hayman each making one stop in the first 14 minutes. The Wildcats had a flurry of shots starting with 14 minutes to play. The Wildcats had a shot blocked by Bradshaw, a corner, and shots from Maria Leguizamon and Indigo Kirk that both missed left.
The Rams nearly found the back of the net in the 83rd minute as a cross and collision in the middle of the box had the ball pop loose. Maria Leguizamon came across behind Myers and calmly played the ball away before a Ram could get on top of it. Myers made an easy save on a header with 2:40 left and then came off her line and snared a free kick shot out of the air with 1:30 left for the final chance by either team.
Jefferson held the advantage in shots, 19-14, including shots on goal, 9-2. They also had more corners in the game, 4-1. Arianna Myers made eight saves for the shutout.
The Wildcats are back home this weekend for their next contest, as they welcome Lincoln (Pa.) to the WU Athletics Complex on Saturday. The opening whistle is set for 12:00 p.m.
