NEWARK, Del. - - Holy Family used a 6-0 run to take an 11-10 lead in the fifth set, but the Wilmington University volleyball team answered with the final five points to take the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division battle, 3-2, on Tuesday night inside the WU Athletics Complex.
Set scores for the match were 25-20, 16-25, 23-25, 25-15, and 15-11.
The Wildcats (5-7, 2-0 CACC) went through the first set without a hitting error, hitting .419 as a team. They scored four straight to take a 21-15 lead and then traded points until the end, getting a kill from Cassidy Miller to win, 25-20.
The Tigers answered in the second set, using a 9-3 run to take a 13-9 lead. Another 9-2 run put the Tigers up 23-15 and then then evened the match by winning the set, 25-16.
The Wildcats started the third set strong, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. They held leads of 13-8 and 17-13 before the Tigers started making a comeback. A 5-1 run put the Tigers in front, 20-19. The teams traded back-to-back points, tying the set at 21-21 and 23-23. But the Tigers got back-to-back kills at the end of the set to take the game, 25-23.
Leading 8-7, the Wildcats went on a 7-2 run to gain a 15-9 lead in the fourth set. The Tigers got to within 18-14, but then a kill from Eliza Schneider started a 4-0 run for the Wildcats for a 22-14 lead. A kill from Karla Nunez-Rivera gave the Wildcats set point and then a block from Miller and Nunez-Rivera forced the match into a fifth, 25-15.
Tied 4-4 in the fifth, the Wildcats scored four straight to take an 8-4 lead. Two more Tiger errors gave the Wildcats a 10-5 lead and a timeout from Holy Family. Out of the timeout, the Tigers rattled off the next six points, taking an 11-10 lead. Out of a Wildcats' timeout, a kill from Chelsea Blaine-Agett righted the ship and Addison Hoover went on to serve out the match. She had two aces in a 5-0 run as Christine Covello and Blaine-Agett finished the match with a block, 15-11.
Karla Nunez-Rivera had 19 kills with only one error on 45 attempts, hitting .400 for the match. She also added 13 digs and five blocks for 22.5 points. Eliza Schneider put down 131 kills with only two errors, adding four digs. Cassidy Miller finished with 12 kills with only three errors on 17 swings, hitting .529 for the match. She also added eight total blocks in the win. Addison Hoover had 13 digs while Morgan Daniels chipped in with 10. Christine Covello dished out 38 assists in the win.
The Wildcats remain home for their next match, as they kick-off Homecoming Saturday with a match at 11:00 a.m. against Caldwell.
